440 people used oxymetazoline 1% cream once a day for a full year. Treatment-related side effects were reported by 8.2%, most often irritation where the cream was applied, and 3.2% stopped because of them. Nothing worrying showed up in skin blanching, rosacea bumps, or visible vessels. Fewer than 1 in 100 had rebound redness after stopping. Notably, results at week 52 were much better than at four weeks: 37% improved by two grades at three hours after a dose, and 43% at six hours. The catch is that everyone knew they were on the drug and there was no comparison group.
