The antibacterial effect that retinol does not have

Retinaldehyde was the only one of the three vitamin A forms with measurable antibacterial activity, and reduced acne bacteria on volunteers' skin over two weeks.

Researchers tested retinol, retinaldehyde and retinoic acid against a panel of bacteria including reference strains and 133 samples taken from patients. Only retinaldehyde showed significant antibacterial activity, and only against gram-positive organisms — it did nothing to gram-negative bacteria. They then applied 0.05% retinaldehyde or an inactive cream to the foreheads of 22 volunteers daily for two weeks and counted the bacteria living there. Acne bacteria and staphylococci both fell measurably on the treated side, with no resistant bacteria appearing. One detail makes this more interesting than it first looks: the researchers traced the effect to the aldehyde chemical group rather than to anything specifically retinoid, since unrelated aldehyde compounds behaved similarly. Two boundaries matter. This measured bacteria on healthy skin, not acne improvement in patients. And both papers reporting it came from the same research group, with no independent replication.
