These two are not alternatives, and it is worth saying so before anything else. CoolSculpting is a fat-reduction device. Morpheus8 is a radiofrequency microneedling device that works on skin.
Morpheus8 does not reduce fat. The one study that measured it took ultrasound scans under the chin in a split-face trial with 30 people completing, and found the dermis thickened while the fat layer did not change significantly. The paper is titled "...without Lipolysis."
So the useful question is what you are actually seeing in the mirror. If what you can hold between your fingers is a soft pad of fat, that is a volume problem, and of these two CoolSculpting is the one that targets it. If the skin itself is loose, crepey or hanging, that is laxity - and freezing fat will not help. It can make it look worse, because taking fat out from under slack skin does not shrink the skin.
One thing to keep straight about the brand. InMode does hold real FDA wording for fat and for cellulite. It belongs to other products in its range - BodyFX for cellulite, and the Evolve Transform applicator for the abdomen. It does not belong to Morpheus8.
The pins are coated with insulation except the last 0.5 millimetre, so energy comes off the tip and the surface is largely spared. It is the Fractora platform, first cleared in 2011, with deeper insulated needles and a new name.
Granted through a De Novo request, DEN090002, decided 24 August 2010, which created the FDA device category for cryolipolysis.
Each pass leaves fractional columns of thermal injury surrounded by untreated tissue. Collagen contracts and rebuilds over months.
Over roughly 8 to 12 weeks the body clears them. Nothing at all is done to the dermis.
The highest depth in any FDA summary is 7.0 mm. The 8 mm figure in marketing is 7 mm of needle plus a 1 mm thermal profile - and depth is not something the FDA clears.
The best-evidenced use of this device class is atrophic acne scars.
No Morpheus8 clearance names wrinkles, laxity, acne scars, cellulite, stretch marks or submental fat. Above 62 millijoules per pin, the clearance limits use to skin types I to IV.
CoolSculpting Elite, K212707, cleared 5 November 2021. Treatment under the chin and jaw is indicated separately, up to a body mass index of 46.2.
Barrier function, measured as water loss through the skin, peaks on days one to three and is back to baseline by day seven.
Pain or nerve-type pain arriving a few days later, in the first one to two weeks, is common. That is the conventional clinical description, not a labelled figure.
Published protocols cluster at 3 sessions.
Mostly marketing - but there is a real and awkward fact underneath it.
Fat loss is the third most-reported complication category in the FDA's post-market database for radiofrequency microneedling: 26 of 224 reported events between January 2013 and October 2025. That database, MAUDE, is a voluntary reporting system with no denominator. The figure is a proportion of reports, not a chance that something happens to a patient, and no incidence rate has ever been published. Set against it is the study that measured the fat layer directly and found no significant change.
The two can be reconciled. This device class can be set to reach below the dermis, and body-contouring work by the same investigators deliberately uses subcutaneous radiofrequency to reduce localised fat deposits. So the capability exists at deliberate depths and energies. What does not exist is evidence that facial-depth Morpheus8 reduces fat as a treatment - and where fat loss does turn up in the published record, it turns up as a complaint rather than a result.
A PubMed search for Morpheus8 returns 16 records, and no randomised controlled trial was found. The research supporting radiofrequency microneedling comes from other machines - Lutronic Genius and Infini, Jeisys, Pollogen, Lumenis and several unnamed devices. The class evidence is real. It is simply not this brand's evidence, and readers searching for a brand are usually being shown results generated on a different one.
Plenty of people have some fat and some loose skin. The two treatments target different tissue, so there is no conflict in principle - but no published study has tested them together, and the order matters. Reducing fat can make laxity more visible, which is worth raising with whoever is planning your treatment.
If you get cold sores, tell your provider when you book, not on the day. Antiviral medicine is started in advance, so it has to be prescribed beforehand. There is no published data on cold sore reactivation after radiofrequency microneedling specifically; the practice is carried over from laser resurfacing, where reactivation is well documented and prophylaxis is standard.
Also disclose a pacemaker or an implantable defibrillator, and any metal implant near the treatment area. These are labelled contraindications for radiofrequency devices generally. They are precautionary rather than tested - no published study has treated patients with cardiac implants - so the right people to advise you are your cardiology team.
These are signs of a spreading infection and need urgent care the same day.
