PiXel8-RF and Morpheus8 are cleared for exactly the same thing, and it is not a cosmetic use. Both carry the standard electrosurgical wording: dermatologic and general surgical procedures for electrocoagulation and hemostasis - sealing tissue and stopping bleeding. That is PiXel8-RF's clearance in full (K233147, October 2023). Morpheus8 added coagulation or contraction of soft tissue in July 2023. Wrinkles, acne scars and skin tightening appear in neither. Treating those with either device is off-label, which is legal and routine.
PiXel8-RF sits at the value end of this market, and that is a fact about the machine, not about your bill. Rohrer Aesthetics is a US company in Alabama that imports and rebadges; the design PiXel8-RF was cleared against is the Korean-made Pinxel. Platforms in this category vary widely in what a clinic pays for them, and the cheaper ones tend to be priced more competitively per session. But what you pay is set by the clinic, the area treated and the number of sessions - not by the sticker on the console.
The specification you would most want to compare is missing on one side. PiXel8-RF's FDA summary lists tips of 25, 49 and 64 pins and an operating frequency of 4 MHz - the highest documented in the FDA paperwork of any of the widely sold radiofrequency microneedling devices. It does not state a needle depth range, and it does not state whether the needles are insulated. Morpheus8's depths and insulation are documented. If depth is the reason you are choosing, that gap matters.
Rohrer is a US company; the device it was cleared against is the Korean-made Pinxel, so this is essentially that hardware family under a US brand.
Cleared against InMode's older Fractora; its FDA device name is "the Morpheus8 (Fractora) Applicators".
Bipolar means the current stays between electrodes inside the tip rather than travelling through the body to a return pad. Whether the needles are insulated is not stated in the FDA summary. Rohrer says it offers both insulated and non-insulated tip options - that is a manufacturer statement, so ask which tip is being used on you.
The operator manual describes needles coated with insulating material except for the distal 0.5 mm, which spares the surface.
Pin counts are documented; depth is not. Ask the clinic to show you the depth setting on the screen and to tell you what it will be set to.
No wrinkles, no acne scars, no tightening, and no skin type statement.
Above 62 millijoules per pin, Morpheus8 is limited on-label to Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV.
Published protocols in this field cluster at three sessions, three to eight weeks apart. The single-use tip is usually the largest per-session cost, so ask how many tips a course needs.
There is no reliable published price for a PiXel8-RF treatment. There is one dated figure for Morpheus8: RealSelf's cost page, updated 10 May 2024, gives an average of $1,861 drawn from 124 self-reported patient prices, with single small-area sessions starting at $549 and a full series running upwards of $4,000. That is consumer-reported, not audited, not a random sample, US-skewed and now some years old.
No professional society publishes an average price for this treatment at all. Anything presented online as a national average is either clinic advertising or someone adding up clinic advertising.
What actually drives what you pay: the area treated, how many sessions are packaged, the cost of the single-use tip, the depth and applicator chosen, who is performing it and where, and any add-ons. A cheaper machine does not automatically mean a cheaper treatment, and it certainly does not mean a worse one.
No published trial names PiXel8-RF. Morpheus8 has 16 PubMed records and no randomised controlled trial. The research that supports radiofrequency microneedling was generated on other machines - Lutronic's Genius and Infini, Jeisys, Pollogen, Lumenis and several unnamed devices.
That research is genuinely encouraging for one use in particular. For atrophic acne scars - the sunken, pitted kind - a systematic review of 16 studies and 481 patients, including 6 randomised trials, concluded the treatment is "likely" effective on its own, and a 2026 split-face trial in which the assessors did not know which side had which treatment found no significant difference from fractional CO2 laser, with shorter redness, pain, swelling and scabbing and fewer episodes of darkened skin afterwards. Six months is where the measured evidence stops. Nothing has been followed longer under controlled conditions.
One of these two will not tell you how deep it goes. Ask for the depth setting in writing before you agree to anything.
An analysis of the FDA's postmarket reporting database from 2013 to 2025 found 114 reports containing 224 events across radiofrequency microneedling devices as a group: 56 textural changes, 41 pigment changes, 26 involving fat loss, and 14 burns.
The database is voluntary and has no denominator, so none of those numbers can be turned into a chance that something happens to you. Against them, a split-face study in 30 people who completed it measured the fat layer under the chin by ultrasound and found the dermis thickened while the fat layer did not change significantly. Burns in this category are mechanically linked to non-insulated needles, excessive energy per pin and overlapping passes - which is another reason to ask which tip is going on your skin.
If you get cold sores, say so when you book, not on the day. Antiviral medicine is started in advance, so it has to be prescribed beforehand. There is no published data on cold sore reactivation after radiofrequency microneedling specifically; the precaution is imported from laser resurfacing, where reactivation is well documented.
Also disclose a pacemaker or implantable defibrillator, and any metal implant in or near the treatment area. These are labelled contraindications for radiofrequency devices generally, precautionary rather than tested, and your cardiology team is the right source of advice.
