These are two machines doing the same job. Both are radiofrequency (RF) microneedling: needles carry an electrical current into the dermis, heating small columns of tissue and leaving the skin between them untouched. Neither is a laser.
The genuine differences are in the hardware. Potenza can run monopolar or bipolar current at either 1 MHz or 2 MHz, which is four combinations on one platform. Morpheus8 is bipolar at 1 MHz, with pins insulated except the last 0.5 mm, and its longer tips reach considerably deeper.
Neither is cleared for a single cosmetic use. Potenza's FDA clearance says it is "intended for use in dermatologic and general surgical procedures for electrocoagulation and hemostasis." Morpheus8's says the same, with "coagulation/contraction of soft tissue" added in 2023. Wrinkles, acne scars, laxity, cellulite and jawline contouring appear in neither. Treating those is off-label, which is legal and routine — but it means the clearance is not evidence the device works for them.
And the brand you choose is not the brand that was studied. A PubMed search for "Morpheus8" returns 16 records and no randomised controlled trial. Potenza is named in two small studies. Nearly all RF microneedling evidence was generated on other machines.
Maximum power 50 W. The newest version also adds non-needle RF tips that only touch the skin surface.
Tips come in 12, 24 and 40 pin versions, plus a shallow resurfacing tip fixed at 0.5 mm.
Pins are coated with insulation except the distal 0.5 mm, so energy leaves the tip only and the surface is spared.
A 2024 clearance lowered the maximum insertion depth from 4.0 mm to 2.5 mm and made the needles thicker, from 0.25 mm to 0.35 mm.
FDA summaries state a maximum of 4.0 mm for the 12-pin tip and 7.0 mm for the 24- and 40-pin tips. InMode's widely quoted "8 mm" is 7 mm of needle plus a claimed 1 mm of surrounding heat, and it comes from a press release.
No cosmetic indication, and no Fitzpatrick skin type statement anywhere in the clearance.
Carries an on-label limit: above 62 mJ per pin, use is restricted to Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV.
Potenza is named in two small studies. A retrospective series of 29 Japanese women treated for melasma found the standard melasma severity score essentially unchanged, and the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.16); about 28% reached a 25% or greater improvement, and satisfaction was 62%. One author is employed by Jeisys, the manufacturer, and two are Jeisys speakers. Separately, a 20-person evaluator-blinded split-face trial for atrophic acne scars used Potenza on both halves and added a picosecond laser to one side; both halves improved and there was no significant difference between them.
Morpheus8 has almost nothing device-specific. A PubMed search returns 16 records in total, several of them in industry-sponsored journal supplements, and no randomised controlled trial. The evidence people are shown when they research Morpheus8 was mostly generated on Lutronic, Jeisys, Pollogen and Lumenis devices.
That is not a mark against either brand. It is the state of the field.
Morpheus8's clearance carries a real safety limit: above 62 mJ per pin, the applicator is restricted to Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV. Clinics advertising it as safe for all skin types are only correct below that threshold. Potenza's clearance contains no skin type statement at all.
RF heating does not depend on pigment the way laser light does, which is why RF microneedling is used across skin tones where ablative lasers carry more risk. But energy per pin, needle density, depth and the number of passes still matter, and conservative settings in deeper skin tones are what the labelling contemplates.
