Retinoids speed up cell turnover and can temporarily weaken the skin barrier, which leaves skin more reactive. Essential oils are among the more common causes of contact allergy. Putting several of them in a retinoid aimed at sensitive users raises the chance of irritation for no real benefit.
A "complex" percentage like "3.5%" is a blend figure. It does not tell you how much retinol or HPR is present, so you cannot compare it to a product that states a single number.
Combining HPR with retinol is a reasonable idea, since the two reach the receptor by different routes. The formulation is not the problem here; the fragrance choices and the missing dose are.

Pairing HPR with retinol is a defensible idea. They work through different routes — HPR appears to bind receptors directly, retinol converts — so combining them is not unreasonable formulation.
The squalane base is gentle, and the serum feels good.
Irritation is expected, not a sign it is "working." Redness, flaking and stinging in the first weeks are common with any real retinoid. Start twice a week and build up. If it is still angry after a few weeks, the dose is too high for you.
"3.5% Retinoid Complex" tells you nothing you can use. It is a blend number. Dermalogica does not disclose how much retinol or how much HPR is in it — so you cannot compare this to any other product, including a $10 one.
It is perfumed with essential oils — geranium, rosewood, eucalyptus, sandalwood, cypress, cedarwood and Siberian fir — plus linalool.
That is a genuinely poor decision. Retinoids irritate skin and compromise the barrier. Essential oils are a leading cause of contact allergy. Putting seven of them in a retinoid aimed at sensitive users is the most avoidable flaw on this page.
