MENDs stands for microscopic epidermal necrotic debris. They are the fine dark specks and gritty, sandpapery texture that appear on your skin a day or two after a Moxi treatment.

Each speck is a tiny column of treated tissue carrying pigment out of the skin. The laser breaks up pigment; the MENDs are how it leaves. Researchers have described this as a melanin shuttle.

The core timeline is well established: they form within a day of treatment and are shed within seven days, by which point the outer layer of skin has fully regenerated. The finer detail people quote — most visible around day two, shedding days three to five — is consistent with that but rests on weaker sources.

They are supposed to happen. They are not a burn, and they are not a bad reaction.

What is actually happening

Moxi is a fractional laser. Rather than treating the whole surface, it creates thousands of microscopic columns of treated tissue, leaving untouched skin in between — which is why recovery is quick.

Inside each of those columns, tissue is coagulated along with the pigment it holds. The skin then pushes that material up and out.

Researchers who first described this called it a melanin shuttle: the debris carries pigment out of the skin as it rises to the surface and sheds. When your brown spots lighten, this is the process that did it.

What it looks and feels like

  • A bronzed or speckled appearance across the treated area, sometimes described as a coffee-ground or windowpane pattern
  • A distinctly rough, sandpapery texture when you touch it
  • Fine dark dots visible up close, more obvious on areas that had more sun damage

It is more noticeable on people who came in with more pigment, because there was more to shuttle out.

The timeline

Two of these points come from real human histology, and two do not. It is worth knowing which is which.

  • Day 1 — MENDs appear. From a biopsy study of twelve people, using an early fractional laser on forearm skin.
  • Day 2 — most visible. This one comes from an animal study, not from human research.
  • Days 3 to 5 — they shed. This is Sciton's own patient guidance rather than a published finding.
  • Day 7 — the outer layer is fully regenerated. Back to the human biopsy study.

So the shape of the week is solid: they form within a day and are gone within seven. The day-by-day detail is plausible and widely used, but no biopsy study of Moxi specifically has confirmed it. Some people run a little ahead or behind.

What not to do

Do not scrub, exfoliate, or pick.

It is tempting, because the texture is unpleasant and the specks look like something to be removed. But the debris is carrying pigment out on a schedule, and forcing it off early risks irritation, uneven lightening, and a mark where a spot used to be.

Let it shed on its own. It always does.

What to do instead

  • Moisturise as your provider directed. Bland and simple is better than active.
  • Protect from sun. This is the aftercare instruction with real evidence behind it — sun exposure after pigment treatment can undo the result.
  • Skip actives — retinoids, acids, scrubs — until the shedding is finished and your provider says otherwise.
  • Be patient with makeup. Guidance differs; Sciton says 24 hours, many clinics say wait until shedding is done.

Before your next session

If you get cold sores, tell your provider before booking. Laser can reactivate the virus, and antiviral medication started in advance is the standard precaution.

When it is not MENDs

MENDs are dry, fine and shed cleanly. What should not happen is blistering, an open weeping area, thick crusting you were not warned about, or pain and swelling that increase after day three.

Those are not part of the normal process. Contact your provider the same day.

A cluster of small painful blisters is worth a call too — laser treatment can trigger a cold sore flare, and that responds best to prompt treatment.
