Day 1 — Red, warm, tight. Similar to a moderate sunburn. Swelling is possible, most often around the eyes.
Days 2 to 3 — The bronzing appears. Fine dark specks across the treated area and a distinctly sandpapery feel. This is the phase people are not warned about clearly enough.
Days 3 to 5 — The specks shed. Texture gradually smooths.
Days 6 to 7 — Clear, often brighter. Published work on this type of laser shows the outer layer of skin fully regenerated at seven days.
Some pinkness can persist a little past that, which is unremarkable.
Redness hides reasonably well once makeup is allowed.
The bronzed, speckled texture does not. It is a surface texture, not a colour, so foundation tends to sit on top of it and emphasise it rather than cover it. This is the honest limit of "lunchtime laser" marketing.
From a distance, and on a video call, most people look fine throughout. Up close and in daylight, the mid-week phase is noticeable.
Leave at least a week. Two is safer.
The specific trap is booking four or five days out on the assumption that only redness needs to settle. Day four is often the peak of the sandpaper phase.
If the event is important, treat two weeks as the target and you will have margin.
Most timings on a laser aftercare sheet — makeup, exercise, showering, when to resume actives — come from clinical practice rather than from trials, which is why two clinics give different numbers. Sciton's own guidance allows makeup at 24 hours; plenty of clinics say wait until the shedding is done.
Follow your own provider's instructions. They know the settings they used.
The one instruction that is not just convention is sun protection. In the published study of this laser, results had regressed toward baseline at three months, and the authors linked that partly to summer sun exposure.
If you get cold sores, tell your provider before booking. Laser can reactivate the virus, and antiviral medication started in advance is the standard precaution — cold sore reactivation occurred in 0.6% of one large series of non-ablative fractional treatments.
