There is no single pico laser recovery, because there is no single pico laser setting. The wavelength your provider used largely decides your week.

The 755 nm setting is the quickest. Redness is usually settled within about 24 hours.

A 532/1064 nm device is slower. Pinpoint bruising is often still visible at 24 hours. How long it then takes to clear has not been studied — the trial that measured this stopped looking at 24 hours.

Treated pigment usually darkens before it lifts. Spots go darker, then flake away over one to two weeks. That is the treatment working, not a bad reaction.

Day 0 — the appointment

The pulse is usually described as a sharp snapping sensation, like a rubber band flicked against the skin. Numbing cream is common.

Immediately afterwards you will have redness and some swelling. Treated spots often go briefly white or frosted — that fades within about an hour and is expected.

Some areas may show pinpoint bruising straight away, particularly if the 532 nm or 1064 nm wavelengths were used.

Day 1 — this is where the settings show

In the one study that photographed and biopsied both, a 755 nm device with a lens array left redness that had largely settled by 24 hours, while a 532/1064 nm device with a holographic optic left pinpoint bruising still visible at that point.

One caveat worth carrying: that study compared two different machines with different optics, not one machine at two settings. So it is not purely a wavelength effect — the device and the optic matter too.

If you do not know which device and which setting were used on you, ask. It is the single most useful thing to know about your own recovery.

Days 2 to 4 — it looks worse before it looks better

Treated pigment darkens. Spots that were light brown go noticeably darker, sometimes almost black, and the surface may feel rough or gritty.

This is the expected course. The pigment has been broken up and is working its way out through the skin.

Makeup is usually allowed once the skin is intact and not weeping, though clinics differ — follow what yours told you.

Days 5 to 14 — the flaking phase

The darkened spots lift and flake away, gradually rather than all at once. Skin underneath looks clearer.

Do not pick or scrub them off. Letting them shed on their own is how you avoid a mark where the spot used to be.

For tattoo work, the change over this period is subtler — ink fades gradually across sessions rather than flaking away visibly.

Weeks 2 to 8 — between sessions

Most protocols space sessions four to eight weeks apart, which gives the skin time to clear the broken-down pigment and recover.

For pigment or acne scarring, a short series is usual. For a tattoo, expect ten to twelve sessions, sometimes up to twenty — and expect progress to be gradual and to slow down as you go.

The one aftercare rule with evidence behind it

Sun protection. Most laser aftercare instructions are clinical convention rather than tested rules, but sun exposure after pigment treatment is a genuine and documented problem — it undoes results and raises the risk of darkening afterwards.

Everything else on your aftercare sheet is worth following, and your provider knows what they did to your skin. Just be aware that the timings vary between clinics because the evidence behind them is thin.

Before you book

If you get cold sores, tell your provider. Laser treatment can reactivate the virus, and antiviral medication started in advance is the standard precaution.

Call your provider if

  • Blistering, crusting, or an open weeping area appears that you were not warned about
  • Redness, swelling or pain increases after day three rather than settling
  • A treated area darkens markedly in the weeks afterwards and is not clearing
  • You develop a cluster of small painful blisters, which can be a cold sore flare triggered by treatment
