The claimed mechanism is cryolipolysis: cool fat cells enough and they die, and the body clears them over the following weeks. That mechanism is real, and it is the basis of medical devices like CoolSculpting.
The question is whether a handheld wand delivers it. FDA-cleared cryolipolysis devices clamp or press a fixed applicator onto a specific piece of tissue and hold it at a controlled temperature for 35 to 45 minutes, with sensors monitoring the tissue and a gel pad protecting the skin. The temperature and the duration are the treatment. CryoSlimming instead moves a wand continuously across the surface, typically starting with a couple of minutes of warming and then cooling the skin surface to somewhere around 8 degrees Celsius below freezing for the rest of the session. No single piece of fat is held at a target temperature for a controlled length of time, and the depth reached is limited by how long the wand stays in one place.
Whether that is enough to injure fat cells in a reproducible way has not been established. Cold applied to the surface certainly reaches the fat to some degree, and there is a plausible mechanism. But plausible mechanism and demonstrated effect are different things, and this is a case where the second has not been shown.
Two other effects are almost certainly contributing to what people see. Massage with a cold wand moves fluid out of tissue, which changes a tape measure reading immediately. And redness and mild swelling settle over the following hours, which changes how skin looks. Both are temporary and neither involves fat going anywhere.
Ask directly: is this device FDA-cleared for fat reduction? The honest answer is no. How the question is handled tells you a lot about the provider.
Ask what the refund or guarantee policy is on a package, and get it in writing before paying up front for ten sessions.
Ask who is performing it and what training they have. These services are usually delivered by spa technicians rather than medical staff, and that is legal in most states, but you should know it.
Get before photographs and measurements taken by someone other than the person selling you the package, in the same clothing and lighting each time. Measurements taken immediately after a massage will read smaller. Measure on a different day.
Declare any cold-related blood disorder, Raynaud's, circulation problem or loss of sensation.
Clinics commonly ask you to avoid carbohydrates for a couple of hours beforehand and to drink water. There is no established reason this matters, and it will not change the outcome.
Eat and drink normally otherwise.
Wear something loose. The area will be red afterwards.
You lie down and the technician applies oil or gel to the area so the wand can glide.
The session usually starts with two to four minutes of warming. The wand feels pleasantly hot.
Then it switches to cooling. The wand is moved continuously over the area in slow, overlapping strokes. The cold builds over the first few minutes and then the area goes numb.
Most people describe it as cold and slightly uncomfortable at first, then fine once numb. It is not usually painful. Some people find the cold genuinely unpleasant for the whole session.
The wand keeps moving. If it stays in one place too long the skin can be injured, so continuous movement is not optional.
Sessions run 20 to 40 minutes depending on the area.
At the end the skin is bright red, cold, and may be blotchy. This is expected and it fades over an hour or two.
You are often measured immediately afterwards. Be aware that a measurement taken at that moment is the least reliable one available.
There is no downtime. You go back to everything straight away.
First hour or two: the area is red, sometimes mottled or blotchy, and feels cold and slightly numb.
Rest of the day: redness fades, occasionally leaving mild pinkness overnight.
First few days: some people notice tenderness or a mild ache. Bruising is uncommon since there is no suction.
Numbness is usually brief — hours rather than the weeks that follow medical cryolipolysis, which reflects how much less cold exposure the tissue has actually had.
Between sessions there is nothing to do. Clinics recommend drinking water and avoiding sugar afterwards. It does no harm and there is no reason to believe it changes anything.
Anything that blisters, or a patch of skin that stays white or waxy, is a cold injury and needs looking at.
The honest answer is that nobody can tell you reliably what you will get, because the treatment has not been tested in a way that would let anyone say.
What providers report and what people describe is a small reduction in a measurement over a package of sessions, and skin that looks a bit tighter and smoother for a while. Some people are pleased. Others complete a package of ten and see nothing.
Be careful with before-and-after inch loss quoted on the day. A cold massage moves fluid out of tissue, and a tape measure will read smaller within minutes. That is not fat, and it returns. A measurement taken a week later in the morning is worth something. One taken as you get off the table is not.
It does not affect your weight, and it does not treat obesity.
Who is happy: people who wanted to try something, enjoyed the sessions, and were not counting on it.
Who is disappointed: anyone who bought a large package expecting a visible change; anyone comparing it to what medical fat reduction delivers; and anyone who was told, or allowed to believe, that it is the same thing as cryolipolysis.
If a modest, evidence-backed reduction in a fat layer is what you want, the FDA-cleared devices are the ones with the record — cryolipolysis, laser and radiofrequency fat reduction all produce a measurable change of a similar size. If the goal is firmer-looking skin, Thermage or Ultherapy are aimed at that specifically. If it is fat under the chin, Kybella is an established option. All of those cost more than a CryoSlimming package in some cases and less in others, but they have been tested.
Home cryo wands, freezing rollers and ice-massage tools are sold widely and cheaply, and they do broadly what a spa wand does at lower intensity: chill the surface, move fluid, redden the skin, and make it look temporarily tighter.
They also carry the same risk, with less control. Applying anything very cold to skin for a long time in one spot causes a cold burn, and cold burns leave marks that can last months. Ice directly on skin is a common way to get one.
There is no reason to expect a home cooling device to reduce fat, and no evidence that any of them do.
The larger point applies to this whole category. No externally applied cold, heat or massage will remove fat from a chosen area in a way you can rely on unless it is holding tissue at a controlled temperature for a controlled time, which is exactly what a handheld wand cannot do. What changes body fat at home works on the whole body, not on a spot you pick.
