The wavelength is 1064 nanometers, the same Nd:YAG used for leg veins, hair removal and deeper vascular work. What makes Laser Genesis different is not the laser but the way the energy is delivered.
Instead of firing a small number of strong pulses at a target, the handpiece is swept back and forth across an area while the laser fires rapidly at low energy — many thousands of gentle pulses across a treatment. Each pulse alone does almost nothing. Together they raise the temperature of the upper dermis by a few degrees and hold it there for a while.
Two things happen at that temperature. Collagen-producing cells are provoked into activity, which over months produces modest new collagen and slightly thicker, tighter skin. And the small dilated blood vessels that make skin look diffusely red are heated enough to be damaged and gradually cleared. That second effect is where Laser Genesis earns its place.
The reason 1064 works for redness in a way that surprises people is depth. Shorter wavelengths — the ones used in IPL and pulsed dye lasers — are absorbed strongly by hemoglobin near the surface and are excellent for visible broken capillaries. But 1064 penetrates further, into the deeper part of the vascular network, where the diffuse background flush lives. Hemoglobin absorbs 1064 weakly, which sounds like a disadvantage and is actually the mechanism: weak absorption means the energy is not used up at the surface and can reach and gently heat the vessels underneath.
That weak absorption is also why 1064 is the safest laser wavelength on deeply pigmented skin. Melanin absorbs it far less than it absorbs shorter wavelengths, so there is much less risk of the laser mistaking your skin for its target.
Set the expectation with yourself first: this is a series. If you can only afford one session, spend the money elsewhere.
Ask whether your redness is diffuse flushing or discrete visible capillaries. They need different treatments and a good provider will look closely and tell you. Many people need both.
Stop retinoids two or three days before. Acids too. This is a mild treatment, but irritated skin is more uncomfortable.
No fresh tan.
Antiviral medication if you get cold sores and the treatment includes the perioral area.
Come with a clean face, no makeup. Some clinics will remove it for you.
No numbing cream needed. This treatment does not require it and using it would mask the heat feedback the provider relies on.
Plan nothing special afterward. You can wear makeup and go back to work immediately.
Bring your sunscreen if you are heading outside afterward.
Photos and cleansing. That is the whole preparation.
Eye protection for you and the provider.
The handpiece is held a short distance from the skin and swept back and forth over one area at a time in overlapping passes, while the laser fires continuously. The provider watches the area heat up and works to a warmth endpoint rather than a fixed number of passes.
It feels like a warm breeze that builds. Most people describe it as pleasant, occasionally getting a bit hot toward the end of each area. If it becomes uncomfortable, say so — the provider is working to your feedback on heat, and that feedback is part of the safety.
There is no snapping, no stinging and no pain in the way other lasers have.
A full face takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Afterwards the skin is slightly pink and warm, and that fades within an hour or two. Makeup goes straight back on if you want it.
There is no recovery. This is the one laser where that is literally true rather than a marketing simplification.
Mild flushing and warmth for an hour or two. Occasionally a bit longer in people who flush easily anyway.
Makeup, exercise, work, all immediately fine.
Sunscreen as usual. There is no heightened sun sensitivity of any significance, but the redness you are treating is worsened by sun so it matters anyway.
Restart retinoids the next day.
One thing to know: some people with rosacea find their redness looks slightly worse for a day or two after early sessions before it settles. That is the treated vessels reacting, not a bad sign, and it becomes less noticeable as the series progresses.
What it does well: diffuse facial redness and flushing. Over four to six sessions the background flush of rosacea noticeably calms, and many people find their skin reacts less to triggers. Red marks left behind by acne fade faster than they would alone.
What it does moderately: skin texture and fine lines. Real but subtle change over a full series and the months afterwards. Pores look somewhat smaller because the skin around them is firmer.
What it does not do: clear brown sun spots, remove individual visible capillaries, treat wrinkles of any depth, tighten anything, or improve acne scars.
Timeline: expect nothing visible after one session and very little after two. Change becomes noticeable around session three or four, and the redness benefit continues improving for a couple of months after the series ends.
How long it lasts: rosacea is a chronic condition, not something a laser cures, so the vessels gradually return. Most people who get a good result keep it up with a maintenance session every three to six months. That ongoing cost — perhaps $600 to $1,500 a year — is the real price of this treatment and should be part of the decision.
Who is disappointed: people who bought one session, people who wanted their sun spots gone, and people expecting the change to be dramatic. Laser Genesis is a quiet treatment. It is also cheap, painless, and genuinely useful for a problem that is otherwise hard to treat, which is a fair trade if you go in knowing what it is.
One more honest note: for redness specifically, a pulsed dye laser or a good IPL course generally produces a bigger result faster, at the cost of a few days of looking bruised or blotchy. Laser Genesis is the gentler, slower, safer route to a similar place. If you have the tolerance for downtime and fair skin, ask about the alternatives before committing to a package.
No home device does this. The treatment depends on delivering thousands of low-energy laser pulses at a controlled wavelength while the operator watches the skin heat, and none of those elements exist in a consumer product.
At-home LED devices, including red light masks, are the closest thing people try. They do not use the same mechanism and do not have the same effect on blood vessels. Red light has a modest calming effect on inflamed skin for some people and is harmless, but it will not clear the vessels driving persistent facial redness.
For redness at home, the useful things are avoidance and topicals rather than devices. Identify your flush triggers and manage them. Daily mineral sunscreen — sun is the biggest driver of worsening facial redness over time. Azelaic acid and niacinamide both help. Prescription options such as metronidazole, ivermectin or brimonidine for temporary redness reduction are worth discussing with a dermatologist, and for many people the medications matter more than the laser does.
The realistic framing: topical treatment controls rosacea, and laser reduces the visible vessels that topicals cannot reach. Doing only the laser is a common and expensive mistake.
