BBL is not a laser. It is intense pulsed light — a broad band of wavelengths fired in a flash, 500 to 1400 nm in its FDA clearance and marketed as 420 to 1400 nm with the current filter set. A laser emits one wavelength. That difference is the root of everything below.
They are good at different things. BBL spreads its energy across the surface and suits redness and diffuse brown patchiness. A picosecond laser delivers extremely short, extremely intense pulses and suits well-defined targets — tattoo ink, stubborn spots, acne scars.
Most clinics use them as partners, not rivals. If you have been offered one and are wondering about the other, the honest answer is often that they solve different problems on the same face.

The pulse is so short that it shatters the target rather than only heating it. With a lens attached it can also create tiny cavities in the skin that trigger repair.
A systematic review concluded picosecond lasers clear blue, green and yellow ink better than older lasers, and that the two are about equal on black. In acne scarring, a picosecond laser outscored a common fractional laser.
Treated spots darken like coffee grounds and lift over about a week.
A 755 nm laser's redness is usually settled within a day. A 532/1064 nm device often leaves pinpoint bruising still visible at 24 hours.
Picosecond lasers arrived with a strong claim: a shorter pulse shatters pigment more efficiently, so you need fewer sessions and get better clearance.
That claim holds up in two places. Tattoo ink in blue, green and yellow clears better than with older nanosecond lasers. Acne scarring also favoured picosecond in a head-to-head against a common fractional laser.
It does not hold up everywhere. For black tattoo ink, picosecond and nanosecond performed about the same. For general brown pigmentation, no clear superiority has been shown. And for melasma, a meta-analysis found no significant benefit.
So "pico" on the door tells you about the machine, not about your result. Ask what it is being used for.
BBL works by putting light into the skin that pigment absorbs. Melanin is one of the things absorbing it — which is exactly why it lifts brown spots, and exactly why it carries more risk in deeper skin tones.
Burns, blistering and pigment change afterwards are the main real-world risks of intense pulsed light, and they rise with skin tone. That does not rule it out, but it does mean the operator matters more than the device: go to someone who treats your skin tone regularly and ask what settings and filters they use.
The same caution applies to picosecond lasers, though for a different reason — any treatment that targets pigment can also provoke it.
Pico Genesis is not a device. It is a treatment protocol run on the enlighten laser. If a clinic quotes you "Pico Genesis," you are being quoted a technique, which is fine — just know you cannot compare that name against a device name as though they were the same kind of thing.
If you get cold sores, say so. Both treatments can reactivate the virus, and the standard precaution is antiviral medication started beforehand rather than treatment after a flare.
