CoolSculpting is the safer default of the two. It freezes fat cells with a suction applicator, and it is the most studied non-surgical fat treatment. Non-invasive laser lipo is the easier appointment. Warm pads sit on the skin for about 25 minutes, with no suction and no cold. Before you compare prices, find out which treatment your clinic means, because "laser lipo" is also used for a kind of liposuction surgery.
The laser warms the fat underneath while the pad surface stays cool. You lie still and read your phone for 25 minutes.
The applicator pulls the fat in and chills it. Afterwards the area is massaged for a couple of minutes.
Most people find it easy. Some feel a deep ache or a brief hot spot.
The cold turns to numbness within about ten minutes. The massage at the end is the part people remember.
It reduces one bulge. It does not change the number on the scale.
Taking fat out from under skin that was already loose can leave it looking a little looser.
Spaced about six weeks apart.
Spaced four to eight weeks apart.
Non-invasive laser fat reduction has been studied less than freezing. Machines sold under the same name are not all alike.
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia: months later the treated area slowly becomes firmer and larger, not smaller. It affects about 0.22% of people, roughly 1 in 455. Liposuction corrects it.
They use low-power red or infrared light. That does not put enough energy deep enough to damage a fat cell.
A gel pack starts cold and warms up as you wear it. The clinic device holds one set temperature for the whole session, and that steady cold is the part that works.

Some clinics use the phrase for a non-invasive treatment: Pads go on the skin, the laser warms the fat, nothing is cut. That is the version compared with CoolSculpting above.
Other clinics use the same phrase for surgery: A thin laser fibre goes under the skin through a small cut, melts the fat, and the fat is suctioned out. SmartLipo is one brand name for it. That is liposuction, usually under local anaesthetic, with real recovery time.
Ask which one is on offer before you book: The two are nowhere near each other on cost, downtime or result.
Neither one is a weight-loss treatment: Both suit a bulge that will not shift in someone already near their usual weight.
Neither one tightens skin: If loose skin is your main complaint, skin-tightening devices or surgery are the honest answer.
Neither one builds muscle: A flat-looking stomach often needs muscle, not less fat. That is what EmSculpt and CoolTone are for.
Not in a way that settles the question: Both take a modest amount of fat off a treated area, and no strong direct comparison exists. So choose on the practical things: how the session feels, how many visits you can commit to, and what the full plan costs.
Ask whether "laser lipo" here means pads on the skin or a cut and a cannula.
Ask how many sessions are in the plan and what the total will be.
Ask to see before-and-after photos of the same body area, taken in the same light and pose.
Ask what happens if you see no change at twelve weeks. Some clinics re-treat, some do not.
