Sculptra vs Voluma
Sculptra is better for a face that has thinned out all over. It builds your own collagen across a course of visits, it shows nothing on the day, and it cannot be dissolved. Voluma is better for cheeks that have gone flat, and for anyone new to injectables. It is a firm hyaluronic acid gel that lifts the same day and can be dissolved if you change your mind.
What is in the syringe
The same material used in dissolvable stitches. It prompts your skin to build collagen, then breaks down and leaves.
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar your skin already makes. Voluma is the stiffest gel in its family, so it holds a shape.
Where it goes
Cheeks, temples and the sides of the face, spread out rather than placed in one spot. It is also used on the body.
Small amounts placed down near the bone, so the tissue above it is supported and lifted.
When you see the result
Nothing on the day. Any fullness in the first week is swelling, not result.
You walk out with the change. Swelling settles over about two weeks and the shape settles with it.
How many visits
Spaced about a month apart. It is a course, not an appointment.
Cheeks are a large area, so plan for a syringe per side rather than one in total.

There is no antidote. A result you dislike has to be waited out, and the wait runs into years.

Side effects to expect

Reversibility is the fact that matters most
Voluma can be taken back out: If it looks heavy, sits wrong or you simply dislike it, hyaluronidase dissolves it in a day or two.
Sculptra cannot be taken back out: There is no enzyme for it, so the plan for a poor result is to wait, and the wait runs into years.
Lasting longer is only an advantage if you like the result: Starting with a gel that can be removed is the low-risk way to learn what suits your face.
They answer two different questions
Voluma answers a narrow one: can you lift this cheek: The injector places gel exactly where the projection is missing, and you both look in the mirror before you leave.
Sculptra answers a wider one: can my whole face look less drawn: It is spread thinly over a large area, and the change arrives so slowly that most people notice it in photos.
So they are not really rivals: Many people end up with both over time, using Sculptra for general fullness and Voluma for the cheekbone itself.
What each one looks like at month three
Voluma looks the same at month three as it did at week two: The gel holds its shape until your body clears it, then it fades gently.
Sculptra is only just arriving at month three: That is the point at which most injectors ask you to judge it, and it is also when they decide whether another session is needed.
Judging either one too early is the common mistake: Two weeks for the gel, three months for the collagen.
What neither one does
Neither one tightens loose skin: Both add volume, and volume added to lax skin usually looks heavy rather than lifted.
Neither one softens a frown line or crow's feet: Those lines come from muscle movement, and botulinum toxin is the treatment that works on muscle.
Neither one lightens pigment: If a shadow stays dark when the light moves, it is colour rather than hollowness, and volume will not change it.

Ask how many sessions or syringes the plan needs in total and what that costs.
