Alpha arbutin blocks tyrosinase, the enzyme your skin uses to make pigment — the same target hydroquinone and kojic acid hit, but gently. Most serums contain 1 to 2%, and there is no good reason to chase a higher number. Expect months rather than weeks, and expect less dramatic fading than you would get from hydroquinone or a prescription cream. Its real strength is tolerability, which makes it a sensible option for sensitive skin and a good maintenance step after a course of something stronger.

What is it?

Alpha arbutin is a skin brightener used for dark spots, melasma, and the brown marks left behind by acne. Chemically it is hydroquinone with a sugar molecule attached, which makes it much milder and slower-acting than hydroquinone on its own. A related form occurs naturally in bearberry, mulberry, and a handful of other plants, but the alpha version sold in skincare is made in a lab, because attaching the sugar the other way round makes it work better. It shows up as a leave-on serum, usually at 1 to 2%.

How it works

It slows down tyrosinase — the enzyme your skin uses to build melanin — so your skin makes less new pigment while the old pigment fades. Because the sugar has to come off before the active part can do much, the effect builds slowly, and a small amount of hydroquinone is released in the skin along the way. European safety reviewers looked at exactly this question and concluded that up to 2% in a face product is safe to use.

Subtypes

  • Alpha arbutin. The lab-made form, and the one worth looking for. Reviews put it at roughly ten times more effective at inhibiting tyrosinase than the natural form. That difference is the whole reason labels say "alpha" rather than just "arbutin."
  • Beta arbutin. The form found in bearberry and mulberry leaf. It may be listed simply as "arbutin," or hidden inside a plant extract such as bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). It works the same way but much more weakly, so a product relying on it is doing less than the label suggests.

If a product lists only "arbutin" or a bearberry extract, assume it is the weaker beta form unless it says otherwise.

Concentrations

  • Under 1%. Usually found in moisturizers and crowded multi-ingredient serums. Probably too little to matter on its own.
  • 1–2%. Where nearly every dedicated product sits, and where most of the testing has been done. 2% is also the ceiling European reviewers assessed as safe for face products.
  • Above 2%. A few products go to 5%, almost always alongside other brighteners. More is not clearly better here, and it goes beyond the level regulators have signed off on for the face.

What to expect

Alpha arbutin is one of the best-tolerated brighteners there is — stinging, peeling, and redness are uncommon, and it layers fine with niacinamide, vitamin C, and most routines. Apply it once or twice daily across the whole affected area rather than dabbing individual spots, since pigment spreads wider than it looks. Give it at least three months, and wear sunscreen every day; without it, the pigment comes straight back regardless of what you put on top.
