Copper is not decorative in the body. It is a required cofactor for lysyl oxidase, the enzyme that cross-links collagen and elastin fibers into a strong network. Without copper, that cross-linking does not happen properly. Copper is also involved in antioxidant defense and in several steps of wound healing.
GHK is a naturally occurring tripeptide — three amino acids — that binds copper tightly and appears in the body after tissue injury. Bound to copper it becomes GHK-Cu, and this complex has been studied for decades. The laboratory picture is genuinely interesting: it appears to stimulate collagen and glycosaminoglycan production, influence the enzymes that break tissue down, and support the cell activity involved in repair. Copper peptides have been used in wound care contexts, which is where the strongest part of the story sits.
The gap is between that and a serum on a face. Repairing a wound and reversing photoaging are different problems, and evidence from one does not carry across to the other. The cosmetic studies that exist are small, short, and frequently connected to companies selling the ingredient. There is no body of independent, well-powered work showing that copper peptides visibly rejuvenate aging skin.
That is not a dismissal. The biology is real and the ingredient has been around long enough to be taken seriously. But the confidence in the marketing, and the prices, run well ahead of the data.
Copper peptides are usually well tolerated, but they irritate more often than other peptides do.
Avoid it if you have a known copper allergy, or have reacted to copper jewelry or a copper-containing product. Contact allergy to copper is uncommon but real.
Avoid it if you have Wilson's disease, a condition in which the body cannot handle copper properly. Absorption from a topical serum is expected to be very small, but this is a case where caution costs nothing and the alternative is untested.
Do not apply it to open wounds, ulcers or freshly broken skin on your own initiative. Copper peptides are used in supervised wound care and after clinic procedures, on a protocol — that is different from putting a cosmetic serum on damaged skin at home.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: there is very little specific data. Topical peptides are generally low concern, but copper peptides have not been studied in pregnancy, and most clinicians would not push you toward them when gentler, better-documented options exist. That is a data gap, not a known risk.
Think twice if your routine is built around vitamin C and acids, because the scheduling conflict is real and inconvenient.
Think twice, too, at the top of the price range. There is no evidence that a $200 copper peptide serum outperforms a $30 one, and no strong evidence that either produces a large visible change.
Be patient and be skeptical of your own memory here. Take a photograph at the start.
First two weeks. Skin may feel smoother and more hydrated. That is the serum base.
Four to eight weeks. Some people report improved firmness and texture. This is also the point at which irritation, if it is going to happen, has already shown up.
Three months. The realistic window for any collagen-related change. Expect subtle improvement in texture and firmness at best.
Six months. About as far as the available cosmetic evidence extends. If there is nothing by now, there is not going to be.
After procedures. This is the fastest and most convincing use. Skin used with copper peptides during recovery from microneedling or laser often looks calmer sooner, over days rather than months.
Deep wrinkles, sagging and established sun damage will not change.
When you stop. Any improvement fades gradually over months. Nothing rebounds.
