Squalane is a lightweight oil that softens skin and slows water escaping from it. It is the stable, hydrogenated version of squalene, a lipid that makes up roughly 13% of your own sebum. That one-letter difference is the whole point: squalene oxidises in sunlight into compounds that are strongly pore-clogging, and squalane cannot, because it has no double bonds left to oxidise. Squalane sits in an unusual position. Its safety record is genuinely well established — decades of use, a formal safety panel review, a zero rating for both pore-clogging and irritation in the standard test, and effectively no allergy reports in the medical literature. Its efficacy record is almost empty: there is no randomised trial of squalane in dry skin or eczema, and no human study measuring what it does to water loss. It is an excellent, elegant, exceptionally tolerable emollient. That is a real recommendation. It is not a proven treatment for anything.

What is it?

Squalane is a simple, colourless, odourless oil. Chemically it is a saturated hydrocarbon — no fatty acids, no fragrance, nothing else in it. That plainness is why it feels light and dry rather than greasy, and why it does not go rancid.

Squalene and squalane are two different things, one letter apart. Squalene, with an "e", is the version your own skin produces. It is a major part of sebum — around 13% — and it is nearly unique to human skin. Squalane, with an "a", is squalene that has had hydrogen added to it in a factory. That change makes it stable.

Squalene used to be sourced mainly from deep-sea shark liver, which raised real conservation concerns. The industry has largely moved to olive-derived and sugarcane-fermentation-derived squalane, and most cosmetic squalane sold today is plant or fermentation based. One thing to know: the ingredient list just says "Squalane" regardless of where it came from. "Plant-derived," "olive," "sugarcane" and "vegan" are things the brand tells you, not distinctions the ingredient list makes. The finished molecule is identical either way — there is no performance difference between olive and sugarcane squalane.

How it works

Squalane is an emollient. It fills the gaps between the flakes of dead cells on the skin surface, so skin feels smooth, and it forms a light oily layer that slows water evaporating out.

It is not a humectant. This is worth being precise about, because a lot of writing about squalane blurs it. Humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid pull water in because they have water-attracting chemical groups. Squalane has none — it is a pure hydrocarbon, completely oil-loving and chemically incapable of binding water. Any hydration benefit comes from slowing water leaving, not from drawing water in.

The chemistry that makes squalane interesting is what it cannot do. Squalene, the version your skin makes, has six double bonds. Those bonds react readily with the reactive oxygen that UVA light generates, forming squalene peroxides. Those peroxides are the problem: in animal testing they were more pore-clogging than well-known comedogenic cosmetic ingredients, while squalene itself was barely comedogenic at all. In cell studies, squalene peroxides also drove inflammatory signalling of the kind seen in acne.

Hydrogenating squalene removes every one of those double bonds. Squalane cannot form those peroxides. That is a sound mechanical argument for using the stable version — and it is chemistry rather than trial evidence, which is worth saying plainly.

Subtypes

Concentrations

Squalane does not have a meaningful "active percentage." It is an emollient, not an active, so it works across the whole range.

  • A few percent, inside a moisturiser or serum — contributes slip and a light emollient feel. This is the most common use, and it is why squalane appears on so many ingredient lists.
  • As a carrier oil — squalane is often the base an active is dissolved in, because it is stable and does not react with anything.
  • 100%, as a pure facial oil — the way most people meet it by name. The industry safety panel recorded maximum reported use concentrations near 97%.

More is not better in any therapeutic sense. Choosing between a 100% squalane oil and a moisturiser containing squalane is a question of texture and what else you want in the bottle, not of strength.

What to expect

Squalane is about as uneventful as skincare gets. There is no adjustment period, no purge, no tingling and no waiting for results. Skin feels softer immediately; that is most of what it does.

It layers with anything — retinoids, acids, vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide. Because it is chemically inert, there are no known interactions.

On acne-prone skin it is generally considered one of the safer oils. In the standard rabbit-ear test used for cosmetic ingredients, squalane scored zero for both pore-clogging and irritation. That is genuinely reassuring, but be clear about what it is: an animal test from 1989 on the raw ingredient, deliberately more sensitive than human skin, and not the same as a human trial. There has never been one. Some people with oily, acne-prone skin do break out with any facial oil, and squalane is not exempt from that.

Allergy to squalane is not reported in the medical literature. Squalane is a single purified molecule rather than a plant oil, so it carries no plant proteins even when it is olive-derived — that is the reason it is generally considered fine for people with olive sensitivities, although no study has tested that directly.
