Two steps, and it is worth separating them because they do different amounts of work.
First, a lotion or suspension of fine carbon particles is applied to the face and left for a few minutes. Carbon particles are small enough to settle into pores and to cling to oil and dead cells on the surface. This step is essentially a black clay mask.
Second, a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nanometers is passed over the skin. Q-switched means the energy comes out in extremely short, very high-power pulses — nanoseconds long. Carbon absorbs this wavelength strongly. Skin, by contrast, absorbs 1064 nanometers relatively poorly, which is precisely why this wavelength is chosen. Each pulse heats and shatters the carbon particles almost instantly, and the mini-explosions lift the carbon off the skin along with whatever it was stuck to.
That is the exfoliation part, and it is real but superficial — it removes surface debris and clears the mouths of pores.
The second, larger claim is that the laser energy also passes into the dermis and gently stimulates collagen, sometimes described as laser toning. Q-switched 1064 at low energy does deposit some heat in the skin, and repeated low-fluence treatments are used for pigment in other contexts. Whether the amount delivered during a carbon peel produces meaningful collagen change is not well established, and the visible glow people notice is much more plausibly explained by the exfoliation and mild swelling than by new collagen.
There is a third effect worth mentioning: the heat and light reduce surface bacteria and temporarily calm oil production, which is why oily and acne-prone skin often responds better to this than dry skin does.
Ask directly which laser is being used and at what setting. A carbon peel should be a Q-switched Nd:YAG. Some clinics run something else and call it the same thing.
Declare all tattoos, microblading, permanent eyeliner and cosmetic pigment anywhere near the treatment area. This is the single most important disclosure for this treatment, because a Q-switched laser can permanently alter cosmetic ink.
Mention any photosensitizing medication, recent isotretinoin use, and any history of cold sores.
Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids for about three days beforehand.
Avoid a tan. Sun-darkened skin absorbs more energy and raises the chance of a burn, even at this wavelength.
Set expectations with yourself before you pay for a package. This treatment is a glow, and packages are sold on the assumption that you will keep coming back because the glow does not last.
Come with clean skin and no makeup.
Expect to wear protective eye shields, not just goggles, if the treatment goes close to the eyelids. Everyone in the room wears eye protection.
Ask how many passes and whether they are treating any area at a higher setting.
Plan on around thirty to forty-five minutes including the time the carbon lotion sits on the skin.
The skin is cleansed and dried thoroughly. Any residual makeup or oil affects how evenly the carbon settles.
A black carbon lotion is brushed over the treatment area in a thin, even layer. It looks dramatic and is the reason this treatment is so heavily photographed.
The carbon is left for five to ten minutes to dry and to work into the pores.
Everyone puts on eye protection. You will usually wear metal eye shields.
The laser is passed over the skin, often in two stages: a first pass in a defocused or low-energy mode to warm the skin, then a Q-switched pass that removes the carbon.
Each pulse makes a sharp snapping sound and a small flash. You feel a fine, hot pinprick — most people compare it to a rubber band flick or specks of hot sand. It is tolerable without numbing cream for nearly everyone.
There is a burnt smell. This is normal and it is the carbon, not your skin.
The carbon disappears in strips as the laser passes, which is oddly satisfying to watch in a mirror.
Any remaining carbon is wiped off, and a soothing serum and sunscreen go on.
The laser part takes about fifteen to twenty minutes for a full face.
There is essentially no recovery, and the marketing is accurate on this point.
First few hours. Mild redness and a warm, slightly tingly feeling, similar to light sun exposure. It settles the same day for most people.
Day 1. Skin looks brighter and feels smoother. Some people notice a fine dryness. Makeup is fine.
Days 2 to 4. This is when it looks its best — pores appear cleaner, tone looks more even, the skin has a sheen to it.
Week 1 onwards. The effect fades gradually. By two to three weeks, most people are back to their baseline unless they have kept up a routine.
Aftercare is minimal: moisturizer, sunscreen, and no retinoids or acids for two to three days. Avoid saunas, hot yoga and heavy sweating for twenty-four hours.
Sun protection matters more than the lack of downtime suggests, because you have removed the surface layer and delivered heat into the skin. Both make pigment more reactive to sun for a couple of weeks.
What you actually get: skin that looks brighter, feels smoother and has visibly cleaner pores for roughly one to three weeks. Oily skin looks less shiny for a while. It photographs well and it feels good.
What you do not get: any lasting change. There is no evidence that a carbon peel improves wrinkles, scars, established pigment or laxity in a way that persists, and clinics that market it for those things are stretching well past what the treatment does.
Across a course. Four to six sessions produce a more sustained version of the same effect, mostly because you are never far from the last one. Whether that represents cumulative improvement or simply repeated short-term results is not clear, and the honest answer is that it looks a lot like the latter.
Who is disappointed. Anyone who booked it as a laser treatment expecting laser results. The word laser does a lot of work in the marketing here, and people reasonably assume they are getting something in the same family as fractional resurfacing. They are not — this is a surface treatment with a laser doing the exfoliating.
Where it genuinely wins. Zero downtime, low risk, low pain, immediate visible effect, and a comparatively safe wavelength on deeper skin. For a specific event, that combination is hard to beat.
Compared with the alternatives at the same price. A superficial chemical peel series gives longer-lasting improvement in tone but costs you a few flaky days. A HydraFacial occupies almost exactly the same niche — no downtime, immediate glow, temporary — and the choice between them is largely preference. For actual texture and tone change, Clear + Brilliant or Moxi are the next real step up, with a few days of downtime and a bigger bill.
There is no home version, and this is one where the gap between clinic and home is unbridgeable — the active part is a medical Q-switched laser, which is not sold to consumers and should not be.
Charcoal masks, peel-off black masks and carbon powders marketed as at-home carbon peels are the carbon half of the treatment with nothing to activate it. A charcoal mask is a clay mask. It will absorb some surface oil and it will do nothing else. Peel-off versions rip out surface hairs and damage the skin barrier, which is a poor trade for the satisfaction of the reveal.
Since the benefit of a carbon peel is exfoliation and temporary oil control, the home routine that reproduces most of it is unremarkable: a salicylic acid leave-on product two or three times a week for oily skin, a retinoid at night, and daily sunscreen. Consistently applied, that produces a more durable version of the same result than a package of carbon peels does.
