Dysport

Dysport is a brand of botulinum toxin, the same family of injectable as Botox. In the US it is FDA-approved cosmetically for one thing only: the frown lines between the eyebrows. Its diluent contains cow's milk protein, so a milk protein allergy rules it out.

How It Works

A muscle contracts when a nerve tells it to, using a chemical messenger called acetylcholine. Dysport blocks the release of that messenger at the nerve ending, so the message never lands and the muscle stays quiet or contracts far more weakly.

For frown lines, the targets are the corrugator muscles (the pair that pull your eyebrows toward each other) and the procerus (the one that pulls the skin down between them). Relax those and the skin above stops folding. Existing creases soften over the following weeks because they are no longer being refolded a few thousand times a day.

The effect wears off because nerve endings grow new connections to the muscle over a few months. Nothing is destroyed and nothing is permanent.

The part worth understanding is units. Dysport's approved frown-line dose is 50 units, delivered as five injections of 10 units. Botox uses 20 units for the same area. That does not mean Dysport is weaker — a unit is defined by each manufacturer's own laboratory test, and the FDA label states outright that Dysport's units are not interchangeable with any other botulinum toxin product. So a clinic quoting a lower price per unit is not offering you a cheaper treatment. The number you can actually compare is the price for the treated area.

What It Treats

Moderate evidence
In the US this is an off-label use of Dysport; its only approved US cosmetic use is frown lines. Spread in a grid across the underarm, it stops acetylcholine reaching the sweat glands. Dysport units are not interchangeable with Botox units, so neither the doses nor the per-unit prices of the two can be compared — compare the price for the treated area.
Limited evidence
This is an experimental use with limited evidence. Some small trials report softer, less itchy scars; others find no real difference against placebo or steroid. Where it is offered it is usually added to other treatments rather than used on its own.

Who It's Right For & Who It's Not

Who it's right for

Adults under 65 who want their frown lines softened. That is the population the approval covers and the one the trials studied.

People treating a large area, where a slightly wider spread of product can help the result look even. Injectors often describe Dysport as diffusing a little more than Botox from each injection point. The comparative evidence for that is not as strong as the confidence with which it gets repeated, but it is a common working impression and it drives real dosing choices.

Anyone whose injector is comfortable and experienced with it. Familiarity with a specific product matters more than the label on the vial.

People who found Botox stopped working for them and are trying a different preparation, though Dysport does contain the accessory proteins that Xeomin leaves out.

Who it's not for

Anyone allergic to cow's milk protein. This is a listed contraindication on the label, not a caution — the formulation is made using a milk-derived protein.

People with a neuromuscular disorder such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or ALS. Botulinum toxin can deepen muscle weakness dangerously.

Anyone with an infection at the injection site.

People who are pregnant or breastfeeding. There is no good safety data, and this is elective. It waits.

Anyone whose main complaint is lines that are visible when the face is completely still. Those are set creases and sun damage, and they need resurfacing, retinoids or filler, not a muscle relaxant.

People who want a specific area approved and studied — Dysport's US cosmetic approval covers frown lines only.

How to Prepare

Before you start

Say clearly if you have a cow's milk protein allergy. Dysport is not the toxin for you, and there are four other brands that are.

Bring your medicine list. Aminoglycoside antibiotics such as gentamicin and tobramycin amplify the effect and can cause more weakness than intended. Muscle relaxants and anticholinergics also matter.

Mention any previous toxin treatment, including which brand, how much, and how long it lasted. Dose planning depends on it.

If bruising would be a problem for an event, book at least two weeks out.

On the day

Skip alcohol for about 24 hours beforehand — it thins the blood and bruises show up more.

If your doctor agrees it is safe to pause them, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and fish oil for a few days beforehand. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner on your own.

Come with a clean face, no heavy makeup. It will be wiped off anyway.

Eat something. Fainting at injections is uncommon but happens, and it is worse on an empty stomach.

What Happens During It

Your injector watches you frown, raise your brows and relax, and marks the points. This part matters more than anything that comes after it.

The area is cleaned. Some clinics offer ice or a numbing cream, though most people do not need either.

The approved frown-line treatment is five injections: two into each corrugator muscle and one into the procerus, 10 units each. Each one is a quick sting from a very fine needle.

The whole thing takes about five to ten minutes, most of it assessment and marking.

You may see tiny raised bumps at each site, like small mosquito bites. They flatten within 15 to 30 minutes.

You will be asked to stay upright for a few hours and to avoid rubbing the area. Then you leave.

Recovery

There is no recovery period. People go back to work, drive home, and carry on.

Small red dots at the injection points for an hour or two are normal, as are the little bumps that settle quickly.

Bruises appear in a minority of people, usually as a small purple dot that fades over three to seven days. Makeup covers them after the first day.

A mild headache in the first day or two is common enough that it turns up in the trials.

Stay upright for about four hours and do not massage or rub the area that day. Vigorous exercise, face-down massage and saunas are best left for 24 hours.

By day two or three you will notice the frown is harder to make. By two weeks you are seeing the finished result. Do not judge it before then, and if something looks uneven at two weeks, that is the moment to go back for a small adjustment rather than at day four.

Side Effects & Risks

All botulinum toxin products carry a boxed warning about the toxin spreading beyond the injection site and causing swallowing or breathing problems. That warning comes from high-dose medical use in people with serious muscle and swallowing conditions; it is very rare at cosmetic doses, but it is the reason this is a prescription medicine given by a trained clinician.

Common and expected
  • Small red marks and raised bumps at the injection points, gone within the hour
  • Bruising, particularly if you take anything that thins the blood
  • Headache in the first day or two
  • Nasal congestion and cold-like symptoms, which showed up more often than placebo in the frown-line trials
  • A heavy or tight sensation across the brow as it takes effect
Uncommon but possible
  • A drooping upper eyelid. It happens when product reaches the muscle that holds the lid up, usually from injection placement or from rubbing the area afterward. It is temporary and prescription eye drops can help while it wears off
  • Heavy or dropped eyebrows, usually from too much product in the forehead
  • Noticeable asymmetry at the two-week mark, which a small touch-up normally fixes
  • Dry, gritty or watery eyes
Rare but serious
  • Trouble swallowing, slurred speech, difficulty breathing, or weakness spreading well beyond the treated area. This is very rare at cosmetic doses but needs emergency care, not a phone message
  • Signs of an allergic reaction — swelling of the lips or throat, widespread hives, wheezing

Results

You will notice the frown getting harder to make in two to three days, sooner than many people expect. The full result is in at about two weeks.

What you get is a softer, quieter brow. The vertical lines between your eyebrows either disappear or become much shallower. If those lines are deeply etched and visible when your face is completely still, expect improvement rather than erasure — the crease itself takes months of the muscle staying quiet to soften, and some of it may never fully go.

Duration is about three to four months for most people, which is the same range as the other brands. Some people get a little more, some noticeably less. Big expressive muscles and higher metabolisms tend to burn through it faster. The label does not allow re-treatment more often than every three months.

Who ends up disappointed: people who wanted their whole upper face handled and only had the approved area treated; people whose real problem is crepey, sun-damaged skin texture rather than movement; and people who expected a difference in kind from Botox. Head to head, at properly matched doses, Dysport and Botox produce broadly similar results. The differences that matter in practice are your injector's judgment, the dose, and where the needle goes.

At-Home Versions

There is none, and there cannot be. Dysport is a prescription biologic drug that has to be injected into a specific muscle in a specific plane by someone who knows the anatomy. Nothing sold over the counter contains botulinum toxin.

Creams and serums marketed as "Botox in a jar" usually contain peptides such as argireline. They are not toxins, they do not reach muscle, and their effect on wrinkles is small at best.

Vials of "Dysport" sold online, or injected by someone without medical training in a private home, are a genuinely bad idea. Counterfeit and improperly stored toxin has caused real harm, including hospitalizations for botulism-like illness. If the price seems impossible, that is the reason.
