PicoWay

PicoWay is Candela's brand of picosecond laser. It runs on Nd:YAG at 1064 and 532 nanometers, with optional 730 and 785 nanometer handpieces, and its pulses are among the shortest on the market. The 1064 nanometer wavelength is what makes it a sensible choice on brown and Black skin.

How It Works

Like any pico laser, PicoWay works by delivering energy faster than the target can shed heat, so pigment breaks apart mechanically rather than being cooked. The shorter the pulse, the more of the energy goes into that shattering effect and the less goes into heating the skin nearby. PicoWay's pulses sit at roughly 450 picoseconds at 1064 nm, 375 at 532 nm and 300 at 785 nm — short even within the picosecond category.

The wavelength lineup is the practical difference. 1064 nanometers is near-infrared: it penetrates deep, is absorbed well by black ink, and is largely ignored by the melanin sitting in your epidermis. That last point is the reason it is the standard choice on brown and Black skin. 532 nanometers is green light, strongly absorbed by melanin and by red, orange and brown inks — excellent on superficial spots in lighter skin, riskier in darker skin. The optional 730 and 785 nanometer handpieces exist for blue and green ink, which everything else struggles with.

The Resolve handpiece does something different. It uses a holographic optic to divide the beam into a 10 by 10 array of microbeams, each carrying a small amount of energy to a point below the surface. The stratum corneum — the outer barrier layer — stays intact, so there is no open wound, but tiny zones of controlled damage underneath prompt the skin to lay down new collagen and to break up scattered pigment. Resolve comes in 1064 and 532 nm versions for different depths.

What It Treats

Moderate evidence
PicoWay is used at conservative 1064 nanometer settings for PIH. The point of the picosecond pulse is reduced heat, which matters because heat and inflammation are what create these marks in the first place. It does not stop new marks forming — controlling the acne or dermatitis underneath does that.
Moderate evidence
For melasma, PicoWay is typically used with low-energy 1064 nanometer passes, sometimes through the Resolve handpiece. Very short pulses mean less heat, and heat is a known melasma trigger — that is the real argument for a picosecond laser over an older Q-switched one here. Expect partial lightening and relapse; it works as an adjunct to creams and sun protection.
Moderate evidence
Pigment is a secondary use for a device built around tattoo ink, but a well-matched one. 532 nanometers is strongly absorbed by melanin, so it is effective on superficial spots in fair skin and riskier in darker skin. 1064 nanometers largely ignores the melanin in the outer skin, which is why it is the usual starting point on brown and Black skin.
Moderate evidence
For photoaging, the choice between 532 and 1064 nanometers depends on how deep the pigment sits and how deep the skin tone is. Vascular damage needs a different device, and deep lines need a resurfacing laser. Spots break up and clear over the following weeks; sun protection afterward is what preserves the result.
Limited evidence
Acne scarring is a secondary claim for a tattoo laser. Resolve's grid of microbeams gives mild smoothing with essentially no downtime, and that is the tradeoff: little disruption, little change. Independent evidence is limited, and it often helps the discoloration in a scar more than its contour.

Who It's Right For & Who It's Not

Who it's right for

People with tattoos in most color combinations, particularly if the clinic has the 730 or 785 nm handpieces for blues and greens.

Flat brown spots, freckles and lentigines.

People with Fitzpatrick IV, V or VI skin who need pigment treated. The 1064 nm setting at conservative fluences is the standard approach here, and PicoWay does it well.

Dermal pigment such as nevus of Ota, and café-au-lait macules, though these are unpredictable and can recur.

People who want a low-downtime texture treatment and are realistic about the size of the change.

Who it's not for

Anyone currently tanned.

Anyone who wants melasma permanently fixed. Low-fluence 1064 nm treatment can help as part of a wider plan, but the pigment usually returns and can rebound.

People with deep boxcar or ice-pick acne scars expecting a resurfacing result from Resolve. It softens; it does not rebuild.

Anyone with an active skin infection, open wound or recent isotretinoin course in the area.

Anyone unwilling to keep the treated area out of the sun for the following weeks.

How to Prepare

Before you start

Ask which handpieces the clinic actually owns. A PicoWay with only 1064 and 532 nm cannot do much for green ink.

If your skin is brown or Black, or you have any history of dark marks after injury, ask for a test spot and have it read two to four weeks later, not at the end of the appointment.

Take your own before photos in consistent light.

In the two weeks before

No sun, no sunbeds, no self-tanner on the area.

Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids on the area for several days.

Antiviral tablets from the day before if you get cold sores and the treatment area is around the mouth.

On the day

Clean, bare skin — no makeup, moisturizer or sunscreen on the area.

Allow 30 to 60 minutes for numbing cream if a tattoo is being treated. Resolve and single spots are usually done without it.

What Happens During It

Protective eyewear for everyone in the room.

The provider tests a small area first and watches how the skin responds before covering the whole treatment zone.

Pigment and tattoos. Each pulse feels like a hot elastic snap. Treated pigment blanches white for a few minutes. A few spots takes minutes; a palm-sized tattoo takes 10 to 20.

Resolve. The handpiece is stamped or glided across the area in overlapping passes. It feels like warm prickling rather than the sharp snap of the flat beam, and a full face runs 15 to 30 minutes.

Cold air is usually directed at the skin throughout.

You leave pink and warm. Tattoo areas may be swollen and welted and are dressed before you go.

Recovery

Throughout: gentle washing, generous moisturizer, no acids or scrubs until calm, no swimming, saunas or heavy sweating until any scabs are gone, and daily sunscreen on treated skin for at least a month. Sessions are spaced four to eight weeks apart.

Resolve
Redness and slight swelling for a few hours to about a day, sometimes with a faint gritty texture and a light bronzed look that sheds over three to five days. Most people are back in makeup the next morning.
Pigment spots
Treated spots darken over a day or two, crust, then flake off between roughly day five and day fourteen. Let them fall off on their own.
Tattoos
Redness and swelling for a day or two, often blistering, then scabs that lift over one to two weeks. Cover with ointment and a non-stick dressing. Do not pick — picking is how pale scars happen.

Results

Tattoos
Black ink responds well to 1064 nm and generally clears substantially in four to ten sessions. Red, orange and brown respond to 532 nm. Green and blue need 730 or 785 nm and are still the hardest. White, pink and flesh-toned cosmetic inks can darken permanently on the first pulse. A faint ghost of a dense professional tattoo is a common and honest endpoint.
Sun spots and freckles
Usually clear in one to three sessions, and stay clear if you protect the skin. See sun damage.
Nevus of Ota and dermal pigment
Often a good result, but expect a course rather than a session, and expect partial rather than total clearance in some cases.
Resolve for texture, pores and acne scars
Modest. Skin looks smoother and shallow scarring softens over three to six sessions, with collagen change accumulating for three to six months afterwards. This is a refinement treatment. Deep scarring needs subcision, TCA CROSS or a fractional CO2 laser.
Melasma
Low-fluence 1064 nm work can lighten it, and relapse within months is the norm. It also carries a real risk of causing pale speckling if overdone. Topical treatment, sun protection and sometimes oral tranexamic acid do more of the work.
How long results last
Removed ink does not come back. Cleared sun spots stay gone unless new sun exposure creates new ones. Resolve results fade with continued aging; once or twice a year maintenance is typical for people who like it.

At-Home Versions

There is none, and there should not be. PicoWay is a class IV medical laser costing well into six figures, and its peak power is exactly what makes it dangerous outside trained hands.

Devices sold online as home picosecond pens are not picosecond lasers. They do not remove tattoos and they can cause burns and scars. Tattoo removal creams cannot reach ink sitting in the dermis.

For flat brown spots, the honest home route is a routine rather than a device: daily sunscreen, a retinoid, and a lightening agent such as azelaic acid, tranexamic acid or alpha arbutin. It works more slowly and it also stops new spots forming, which no laser does.

FAQ+
PicoWay or PicoSure — which is better?Neither, in general. PicoSure is 755 nm alexandrite: strong on melanin-driven pigment and green-blue ink. PicoWay starts at 1064 and 532 nm with shorter pulses: better on black ink and the safer default on deeper skin tones. Choose by what you are treating and what skin you have, not by brand. Most clinics own one, not both.
Is PicoWay safe for dark skin?The 1064 nm setting is the accepted option for Fitzpatrick IV to VI, used at conservative settings with a test spot first. Risks of pale patches and dark marks still exist and are mostly a function of settings and operator caution rather than the machine.
How many sessions for a tattoo?Usually four to ten, six to eight weeks apart. Bigger, denser, multicolored or previously treated tattoos take more. Amateur tattoos take fewer.
Does it hurt?Tattoo work hurts, roughly like being tattooed but over a shorter time, and is usually numbed. Spot treatments feel like brief hot flicks. Resolve is a warm prickling most people tolerate easily.
