Coconut Oil (Virgin, Cold-Pressed)

The eczema evidence is real and better than you would expect. It is also comedogenic, feeds fungal acne, and is emphatically not a sunscreen.

What stands out

The eczema evidence is genuinely good, and this surprised us.

In a trial of 117 children with mild-to-moderate eczema, virgin coconut oil was compared with mineral oil. Eczema severity scores fell by 68% with coconut oil versus 38% with mineral oil. Water loss through the skin improved more too.

In an earlier adult trial comparing it with olive oil, coconut oil dramatically reduced Staphylococcus aureus on the skin — the bacterium that colonises eczematous skin and drives flares. Twenty of 26 people started positive; after four weeks, one did.

These are real, published, randomized trials. For eczema on the body, coconut oil has more supporting evidence than most people — including us — assumed.

And it costs almost nothing.

Watch out for

⚠️ It is not a sunscreen. This is the dangerous myth. The "natural SPF 8" claim comes from lab-dish testing, not from human trials. Using coconut oil for sun protection will get you burned.

Do not put it on an acne-prone face. It is rated highly comedogenic. That rating comes from an old and genuinely weak test — done on rabbit ears — so we will not overstate it. But coconut oil is rich in lauric and myristic acid, and the clinical consensus is broad: it breaks out acne-prone faces.

It is not fungal-acne safe. Its fatty acids feed Malassezia — the yeast behind seborrheic dermatitis, fungal acne and dandruff. If you have any of those, coconut oil will make them worse.

It is a weaker occlusive than petrolatum, which cuts water loss by over 98%. Nobody has run coconut oil head-to-head against petrolatum — so we cannot tell you which wins.

It does not cure anything. The trials show symptoms improving, not eczema going away.

Formulation Notes

This page is a good test of whether we are being fair.

It would be easy to dismiss coconut oil as folk nonsense — it is sold with a lot of nonsense attached, and the "natural SPF" claim is genuinely dangerous.

But the eczema trials are real, they are randomized, and one of them is in 117 children. Dismissing it wholesale would be as wrong as the hype.

The honest position is narrow and specific: good evidence for eczema on the body. Bad idea on an acne-prone or fungal-acne-prone face. Never, ever as sun protection.
