An excellent gentle cleanser whose own product page says it removes makeup — while La Roche-Posay's own FAQ tells you to use a separate makeup remover.

Texture — Creamy, low-foam
Key Active — Ceramide + niacinamide + prebiotic thermal water
Best For — Dry, sensitive skin
Price Tier — $$
A genuinely well-built gentle cleanser. Coco-betaine as the main surfactant, with ceramide and niacinamide — it cleans without stripping and leaves the barrier supported.
Fragrance-free, and a large 400 ml bottle for around $20, which is good value.
It does not leave skin tight, which is the single most useful thing you can say about a cleanser for dry skin.
It is a deserved bestseller.
La Roche-Posay contradicts itself on whether this removes makeup. The product page says it does. La Roche-Posay's own FAQ advises using a separate makeup remover.
Believe the FAQ. A low-foam, gentle cleanser like this is not going to shift long-wear makeup or water-resistant sunscreen in one pass, and the marketing copy is writing a cheque the surfactant system cannot cash.
Cocamidopropyl betaine and coco-betaine are in the same family — named Allergen of the Year in 2004. Gentle does not mean allergy-proof, and this is worth knowing if you have reacted to a "gentle" cleanser before and could not work out why.
The "prebiotic thermal water" story is brand-run. The foundational research is authored by a La Roche-Posay scientist.
Too gentle for oily skin, which will not feel properly clean on it.
💧 Glycerin — hydrates
🌿 Niacinamide — calms irritation
⛑️ Ceramides — restore skin barrier
Double cleansing has no clinical evidence behind it — none. There is not a single trial of it as a regimen.
The one study everyone cites never tested a double cleanse at all. It tested each method alone, and found that a cleansing oil on its own removed water-resistant sunscreen completely, while a foaming cleanser left about 37% of it behind.
That is evidence for using the right cleanser, not two cleansers. And in that same study, the surfactant arm dried out 8 people out of 20, while the oil arm dried out one. The second wash is the step doing the damage.
If you wear water-resistant sunscreen or long-wear makeup, use an oil or balm cleanser. You very likely do not need to follow it with this.
