Cooltone vs EmSculpt

Both use magnetic energy to contract muscle and neither removes fat. EmSculpt covers more areas; only the NEO version also reduces fat.

At a Glance

These two do the same job. Both use magnetic energy to force strong muscle contractions, on the stomach, buttocks and thighs, and neither one removes fat. EmSculpt is the one to pick if you want more choice. It is used on more body areas, it has more published research behind it, and its NEO version adds heat that also reduces fat. If your clinic only owns a CoolTone, that is not a reason to walk out. For muscle alone, the two are close.

Also called magnetic muscle stimulation, MMS, CoolTone by Allergan
EmSculpt
Also called Emsculpt, HIFEM, Emsculpt NEO, Emsculpt Neo

What it does

Contracts muscle, nothing else

Magnetic pulses clench the muscle far harder than you can on purpose.

Contracts muscle the same way

The NEO version also warms the fat layer above, so it does both in one session.

Where it is used

Stomach, buttocks, thighs
Those, plus arms and calves
Both
Both need a fairly lean area. Over a thick fat layer, a stronger muscle underneath barely shows.

What it feels like

Deep, involuntary clenching

The muscle tightens and lets go, over and over. Strange rather than painful.

The same clenching, plus heat on NEO

The radiofrequency version feels hot as well, a bit like a warm stone pressed on the skin.

A session

About 30 minutes
About 30 minutes
Both
You lie fully clothed with a paddle strapped over the area, and you go straight back to your day.

How many visits

Four to six, over a few weeks
Usually four, over two to four weeks

How long it lasts

It fades without upkeep
It fades without upkeep
Both
Muscle behaves like muscle. Both need top-ups every few months, or your own training, or the result softens over months.

The main downside

Fewer areas, less research

It is the newer and less studied of the two, and it is offered on fewer parts of the body.

Cost, and the NEO confusion

Two machines share the name. Plain EmSculpt does muscle only. Only NEO also reduces fat, and it costs more.

What you will feel afterwards

Sore, like after a hard workout
Sore, like after a hard workout
Both
The ache usually lasts a day or two. There is no downtime with either one.

Cost

Priced per session, sold as a course
Priced per session, usually dearer
Both
Both are quoted per area and per session. Ask for the price of the whole course and of a year of top-ups.

The at-home or drugstore version

An ab belt is much weaker
An ab belt is much weaker
Both
Drugstore stimulator belts do twitch the muscle, but nowhere near the strength of a clinic contraction. There is no home version of the fat-heating part of NEO at all.

Who each suits

Best for
Stomach, buttocks or thighs, when muscle is the only thing you want.
The mindset
You are happy with a straightforward course and top-ups.
Best for
The same areas, plus arms and calves, or when you also want fat reduced.
The mindset
You want the version with the longer track record.

The real fork is NEO, not CoolTone

Plain EmSculpt and CoolTone are close: Both are muscle-only devices, both take about 30 minutes, both need a course and then top-ups. Choosing between them on results alone is splitting hairs.

EmSculpt NEO is the one that behaves differently: It adds radiofrequency heat, so it reduces fat as well as building muscle. That makes it the option for someone with a soft layer over the muscle.

So ask which machine is in the room: "EmSculpt" on a price list can mean either version, and they are not the same treatment or the same price.

If the answer is plain EmSculpt, you are back to a coin toss: At that point, pick on the clinic, the operator and what the full course costs, because the two devices are doing the same thing to the same muscle.

Neither one is a substitute for exercise

Both build muscle in one area only: They do nothing for your heart, your stamina or your weight.

Both fade if nothing else changes: Muscle that is not used softens again. The people who keep their result are usually training as well.

Neither one is a weight-loss treatment: If there is a real fat layer over the muscle, deal with that first or the change will not show.

What neither one does

Neither one tightens loose skin: Contractions happen below the skin and do not shrink it.

Neither one repairs separated stomach muscles: If the muscles have parted down the middle, strong contractions do not pull the gap closed. That repair is surgery.

Neither one gives a result you can see on the day: Expect to judge it several weeks after the course, from photos in the same pose and light.

Before you book

Ask which machine they own, and if it is an EmSculpt, whether it is the NEO.

Ask how many sessions are in the course and what the total costs.

Ask what top-ups cost over a year.

Ask to see photos of the same area on someone with a similar build.

Is CoolTone as good as EmSculpt? For muscle alone they are close. Both use magnetic energy to force strong contractions and both need a course plus top-ups. EmSculpt is used on more body areas and has more research behind it.
Does either one burn fat?Plain EmSculpt and CoolTone do not. Only EmSculpt NEO adds radiofrequency heat, which reduces the fat layer as well as building muscle.

Can this replace exercise? No. Both build muscle in one area and do nothing for stamina, heart health or weight.
