CoolPeel is not a peel. It is a brand name for a light, superficial way of running a fractional CO2 laser, available only on one manufacturer's device. The pitch is CO2 resurfacing without the week of downtime — which is true, because it is doing considerably less than a standard CO2 treatment does.

How It Works

A CO2 laser emits infrared light at 10,600 nanometers, which water absorbs almost instantly. Since skin is mostly water, the energy is used up in the outermost fraction of a millimetre — it vaporizes tissue rather than passing through it. That is what makes CO2 the classic resurfacing laser.

Fractional means the beam is split into a grid of tiny columns rather than treating the whole surface. Each column of skin is vaporized; the untouched skin between the columns supplies the cells that heal it. That is why fractional resurfacing recovers in days rather than the weeks that full-surface CO2 resurfacing takes.

What CoolPeel adds is pulse shape. Any laser that removes tissue also leaves some heat behind in the surrounding skin. That residual heat does two things: it contributes to tightening and collagen stimulation, and it drives swelling, prolonged redness and the risk of pigment problems. The DEKA platform's H-Pulse mode delivers energy in very short pulses at high peak power, so tissue is removed faster than heat can spread sideways into the skin around it. Less heat left behind means less swelling and less downtime.

The honest consequence is the part the marketing tends to skip. Residual heat is not purely a nuisance — it is a large part of what produces tightening and deeper remodeling in conventional CO2 resurfacing. Removing most of it removes most of the downtime and a good share of the result along with it. CoolPeel is a mild treatment done with a powerful machine, and it needs a series to add up to something.

The word "cool" is also doing more work than it should. Nothing about it is cold. It refers to the reduced heat left in surrounding tissue, not to how the treatment feels — it feels hot.

What It Treats

The short pulses remove tissue before much heat spreads sideways, which is what shortens recovery. It is also why the result is milder — that leftover heat is part of what drives remodeling in conventional CO2. Despite the name it is not a chemical peel, and nothing about it is cold.

Anyone wanting lifting or tightening. A superficial resurfacing treatment does not lift, and the deliberate reduction in residual heat makes it less tightening than standard CO2, not more.

Deeper skin tones, without a careful conversation. Ablative resurfacing on Fitzpatrick IV to VI carries real pigment risk — see the note below.

Anyone on isotretinoin now or within about six months.

Active infection, cold sores, an eczema or rosacea flare, or a recent tan on the treatment area.

People with a keloid tendency, particularly for treatment on the neck or chest.

How to Prepare

Before you start

Ask what depth and density are planned, and ask what the deeper option on the same machine would involve. This one question tells you whether you are getting the right treatment or the marketable one.

Get antiviral tablets if you have ever had a cold sore. Any ablative laser can trigger an outbreak, and on freshly resurfaced skin it can scar. Most providers prescribe them for everyone.

Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids about five to seven days beforehand.

No tan. Sun-darkened skin absorbs more energy and raises the risk of both burns and pigment problems. Most clinics will postpone if you have been in the sun.

If you have brown or Black skin, ask about a priming routine for four weeks beforehand and about a test patch. Both are reasonable requests and good clinics offer them without being asked.

Book it around your life. Redness on day one and two is obvious, and day two or three is the sandpapery flaking day.

Buy a bland moisturizer, a gentle cleanser and a mineral sunscreen in advance.

On the day

Arrive with no makeup, and plan to be at the clinic for about ninety minutes — most of it is numbing cream.

Numbing cream goes on for thirty to sixty minutes. Do not skip it.

Everyone in the room wears eye protection and you will wear internal shields if the treatment goes near the eyelids.

Say something if you have had filler, Botox or any other procedure on the area in the past two weeks.

Arrange to go straight home. You will not want to run errands afterwards.

What Happens During It

Makeup and oil are removed and numbing cream is applied thickly, then left on for thirty to sixty minutes under cling film.

The numbing cream is wiped off and the skin is cleaned and dried.

Eye protection goes on — metal shields under the eyelids if the treatment extends onto the lids.

The handpiece is passed over the skin in sections, usually one pass per area, occasionally two on areas needing more.

You feel hot pinpricks, like small sparks landing on the skin. It is more intense around the nose, forehead and jawline where the skin is thin over bone. Most people find it very manageable with numbing cream, and considerably easier than standard fractional CO2.

There is a burnt smell and often a smoke evacuator running next to your face, which is loud.

The treatment takes about ten to twenty minutes for a full face, which is short compared with the numbing.

Immediately afterwards the skin is bright red, hot and swollen, and looks alarming for the first hour. Cold air or cool compresses help considerably and most clinics use them.

You leave with a bland ointment or a recovery serum on, and instructions not to touch your face.

Recovery

The rules for the recovery week are short. Keep the skin moist with a bland ointment or thick cream — dry, tight skin cracks. Do not pick or exfoliate the bronze flaking, ever; it comes away on its own by day four. No retinoids, acids or scrubs until the skin is fully intact, usually about a week. No sweating, saunas or swimming pools for three to five days. And absolute sun avoidance, with mineral sunscreen the moment the skin will tolerate it — new skin after an ablative laser has almost no pigment defense, and one careless afternoon in week one is the most common cause of a blotchy result.

Bright red, hot, and feels like a strong sunburn. Swelling builds over the first few hours. Cool compresses, bland ointment, and do not put anything active on your skin.
Day 1
Red and swollen, worst on waking. The skin feels tight and rough. Most people would not go to work. Sleeping propped up helps with the puffiness.
Days 2 to 3
Swelling settles. Skin develops a fine, sandpapery, bronze-brown texture — the pattern of treated micro-columns coming to the surface. It looks like a fine grid up close and like a light tan from a distance. Fine flaking begins.
Day 3 to 4
Flaking finishes. Most people are presentable and can wear makeup, often mineral makeup first.

Side Effects & Risks

Common and expected

  • An area that becomes firm, raised or shiny over the following weeks, which can be early scarring
  • Blistering, or an area that turns gray or white and does not recover

Results

After one session: skin looks smoother and brighter at around two weeks, pores look refined, and makeup sits better. Fine lines soften slightly. It is a clear improvement and a modest one.

After a series of three or four: this is where it becomes worthwhile. Cumulative improvement in texture, fine lines, pore appearance and overall skin quality. Early sun damage lifts. Most people who complete a series and protect their skin afterwards are satisfied.

How long it lasts. Structural improvement from collagen remodeling holds for a year or more. Surface brightness fades sooner. Most people who like it return once or twice a year.

What it does not do. It does not lift or tighten in any meaningful sense. It does not clear deep, established wrinkles. It does not correct pitted acne scars — those need deeper resurfacing, subcision, TCA CROSS or a combination. And it does not do what a full-strength fractional CO2 session does, which is the most important sentence on this page.

Who is disappointed. People who booked CoolPeel expecting CO2 laser results with a weekend of downtime. The name and the marketing invite that expectation, and it is the wrong expectation. Also anyone who did one session and stopped — one session of a mild treatment is a mild result.

How to think about the trade. Conventional fractional CO2 costs roughly the same per session, gives substantially more improvement, and takes a week to ten days of visible recovery. CoolPeel gives you perhaps a third to a half of that per session, in three days. Three CoolPeel sessions cost more than one conventional session and may or may not get you to the same place. If your skin needs real work and you can take the time off, the conventional treatment is usually the better value. If you cannot take a week off, or your concerns are early and mild, this is a sensible way to have a CO2 laser without the disruption.

At-Home Versions

There is no home version. Fractional CO2 lasers are class of device that is not sold to consumers, and nothing marketed for home use operates on the same principle.

Home fractional devices exist — small non-ablative diode devices sold for wrinkles — and they are extremely weak by comparison. They do not remove tissue and they deliver a small fraction of the energy. They are safe and unlikely to do much.

Home microneedling rollers and pens are sometimes suggested as an alternative route to texture. Short needles used at home do very little; longer ones create genuine wounds without sterile conditions or depth control, and are a common cause of infection and scarring. Professional microneedling is the safer version of that idea.

The realistic home contribution is what supports any resurfacing plan: a retinoid nightly, vitamin C in the morning, an exfoliating acid a couple of times a week, and daily sunscreen. That routine will not resurface your skin, but it maintains a laser result far longer than the laser does on its own, and skipping it is the main reason people feel their treatment wore off.
