What stands out

The difference between this and a salicylic acid cleanser comes down to contact time. A cleanser is on your face for 30 seconds. This stays on. That's why it does far more.

Salicylic acid's advantage over other acids is that it's oil-soluble — it dissolves in oil, so it can travel down into a clogged, oily pore and break up the plug from inside. Glycolic acid and other AHAs are water-soluble and only work on the skin's surface, which is why they're better for tone and texture than for acne.

It's also anti-inflammatory — chemically related to aspirin — so it calms angry, red pimples as well as unclogging.

The formula itself is well made: no fragrance, no denatured alcohol, and green tea to offset irritation. It's earned its reputation.

Watch out for

Don't use it daily at first. Two to three times a week is plenty. Daily use is the fastest way to strip your barrier — and over-exfoliating is the single most common self-inflicted skin problem.

Don't stack it with a retinoid on the same night until your skin is well adapted. Alternate nights.

It's pricier than it needs to be. The formula is good, but there are cheaper 2% BHA options that perform similarly.
